Daerah Kota Belud terletak di pantai barat
utara negeri Sabah, 70 kilometer dari Kota Kinabalu, ibu negeri Sabah, iaitu kira-kira sejam
perjalanan menggunakan kereta. Daerah ini turut mendapat jolokan nama sebagai
'Daerah Koboi Timur' kerana kehebatan penduduknya menunggang kuda, kerbau dan
lembu.
Asal-usul nama
Nama Kota Belud ini berasal daripada bahasa Bajau, yakni "kota" yang bermaksud kubu
pertahanan manakala "belud" pula bermaksud bukit. Justeru itu, Kota
Belud diertikan sebagai 'Kubu Pertahanan di atas Bukit'.

Kota Belud is a town located in West Coast Division, in the center of Sabah, east Malaysia on the island of Borneo. Its population was estimated to be around 72,337 in 2000, almost evenly divided between ethnic Dusun and Bajau with a sizeable proportion ofChinese ethnicity. It is along the main road connecting Kota Kinabalu and Kudat.
Kota Belud is noted for its huge tamu, or open air market, which is held every Sunday. The Harvest Festival known as Pesta Kaamatan, and "Tamu Besar" is an annual event in Kota Belud.
